As we get older, we may notice some changes, like how we play sports. But it’s funny about some people. They never seem to change. Steve Labbe just turned 50. “I feel great. People are always saying to me, ‘Steve you don’t act your age’. And you know why? It’s all about your mindset.”
Scientists attribute human longevity to genes and lifestyle, such as how you eat, drink, and socialize. But your feeling good can be affected by your attitude about life. One of Steve’s business colleagues recently went on a family camping trip that turned out less than optimal. Geese invaded the campsite at midnight and was followed by torrential rains that soaked everything including his business clothes he needed to where to a business event the next day. He found a dry tee-shirt and shorts and decided he would survive and wouldn’t worry about it. He knows he and his family won’t forget that camping trip.
Steve agrees that sometimes it’s the less-than-optimal situations where memories are made. But how you handle them – your mindset – affects how you feel. He won’t forget his own family vacation disaster. A week of snowmobiling in Northern NH with his entire family was going to be a wonderful get away. But a minor fender bender was followed later in the week by one of the snowmobiles blowing up. The trip home had its difficulties as well, when the axle on the snowmobile trailer broke. And finally, arriving home was met with a foot and half of snow blocking the entrance to the garage. “Don’t worry, be happy,” sings Bobby McFerrin. Some things you just can’t control. Steve believes it is all about the journey.
Mindset affects many things in our lives, including our decisions about plumbing and air conditioning. These directly influence how we feel on a day-by-day basis – warm, cool, damp or dry. Living here in NH where summer is short, and winter often seems long, you probably could easily guess the number of homes with air conditioning. For the few days it gets hot and muggy during the summer, air conditioning may seem unnecessary. Steve estimates that less than 50% of NH residents are using AC in their homes. But this mindset may be changing. In the workplace, AC has become necessary. We are all getting accustomed to AC at the office and in the car. Coming home to no AC is becoming noticeable in how we feel. This is true in the summer, but also throughout the rest of the year, as humidity changes in your house due to turning on the heat.
Steve notes, “I’ve got the right mindset. And I now have my own AARP card as a Member. I feel SOOO good!” For further information about how plumbing, heating, and air conditioning can help your mindset and keep you happy, give us a call!
